I was recently invited to serve as guest conductor of the Minnesota Chorale and Border CrosSing, two of the most renowned choral institutions of the United States. It has been a great honor for me to conduct both institutions, comprised by admired musicians and and colleagues.
The Chorale's Bridges and Border CrosSing's Puentes is a series of musical initiatives that harness the richness and diversity of the global choral repertoire to engage cultural communities, integrate historically-segregated audiences and musicians and raise awareness of pressing social needs.
The theme chosen for my artistic residency was "CREEMOS/BELIEVE" a joint program exploring religious syncretism in Latin America.
It was not only a fantastic professional experience but also a, deeply rewarding, human experience. The reminder that when we allow music to permeate (really) our bodies, we actually become the music, and our experience goes from being engaged as performers/artists to BE one with the music. As we allow this process to happen, (because we have to deal with our beliefs regarding factors as vocal technique and the creative process), our audience is impacted in the exact same way as we are.
Daniel, one of the singers, dared to take his shoes off during the concert in order to "connect better with the Earth" (a request I made during a rehearsal, when talking to them about the performance style of a Brazilian song), and later told me: "I did it without thinking, and I was happy to do it". Kathy, whom I don't know, attended the concert as an audience member and sent me this Japanese tanka poem, written after hearing our performance and being moved by it:
April ascension
voices soar to vaulted space
testifying faith
crossing mythical borders
lágrimas - tears choral bridge
I am infinitely grateful for the invitation from the Minnesota Chorale and Border CrosSing: many thanks Kathy Romey and Ahmed Anzaldua, directors, and both institutions' boards! I am also deeply moved by the expressions of gratitude from my colleagues and fellow musicians, but especially grateful to Kathy and Daniel for taking the time to express it in a more personal way. I believe in the infinite power of music to connect, to create bridges, to heal and expand our creativity without limits! I believe/Yo creo!

Recientemente fui invitada a dirigir la Minnesota Chorale y Border CrosSing, dos de las instituciones corales más renombradas de Estados Unidos. Ha sido un gran honor para mí dirigir ambas instituciones, compuestas por admirados músicos y colegas.
Las iniciativas Bridges (Minnesota Chorale) y Puentes (Border CrosSing) son una serie de proyectos musicales que aprovechan la riqueza y la diversidad del repertorio coral mundial para involucrar a las comunidades culturalmente diversas, integrar a públicos y músicos históricamente segregados y concienciar sobre necesidades sociales acuciantes.
El tema elegido para mi residencia artística fue "CREEMOS/BELIEVE", un programa conjunto que explora el sincretismo religioso en América Latina.
No sólo fue una experiencia profesional fantástica, sino también una experiencia humana profundamente gratificante. El recordatorio de que cuando permitimos que la música impregne (realmente) nuestros cuerpos, nos convertimos en la música, y nuestra experiencia pasa de estar comprometidos como intérpretes/artistas a SER uno con la música. Cuando permitimos que este proceso ocurra, (porque tenemos que lidiar con nuestras creencias respecto a factores como la técnica vocal y el proceso creativo), nuestro público se ve impactado exactamente de la misma manera que nosotros.
Daniel, uno de los cantantes, se atrevió a quitarse los zapatos durante el concierto para "conectar mejor con la Tierra" (una petición que les hiciera durante uno de los ensayos, al hablarles sobre el estilo de interpretación de una canción brasileña), y más tarde me dijo: "lo hice sin pensar, y me sentí feliz de hacerlo". Kathy, a quien no conozco, asistió al concierto como público y me envió este poema tanka japonés, escrito después de escuchar nuestro concierto y emocionarse con el:
Ascensión de abril
las voces se elevan al espacio abovedado
testimoniando la fe
cruzando fronteras míticas
tears - puente coral de lágrimas
Estoy infinitamente agradecida por la invitación de la Minnesota Chorale y de Border CrosSing: muchas gracias Kathy Romey y Ahmed Anzaldua, directores, y juntas directivas de ambas instituciones! También estoy profundamente conmovida por las expresiones de gratitud de mis colegas y compañeros músicos, pero especialmente agradecida a Kathy y Daniel por tomarse el tiempo de expresarlo de una manera más personal. ¡Creo en el infinito poder de la música para conectar, crear puentes, sanar y expandir nuestra consciencia y creatividad sin límites! Yo creo/I believe!
